Somatic & EMDR Therapy

In our trauma-informed work, we will use a blend of therapeutic modalities, including EMDR and somatic therapy, which focuses on the mind-body connection.

When life overwhelms our ability to cope, pushing us beyond what we can handle too quickly or intensely we can feel disconnected from ourselves. This might stem from a single incident, like an accident, break-up, loss, or from ongoing experiences of feeling diminished or unsafe—whether in childhood or adulthood. Living in a world that challenges your sense of safety or the security of those you love can feel traumatic. This can include experiences tied to systemic issues like body shaming, medical gaslighting, transphobic & sexist legislation, or social injustices that create an environment of fear and instability.

Your experience matters.

You deserve space to heal.

Trauma-
Informed

Trauma-informed therapy embraces the understanding that life hardships shape not just our minds but also our bodies. It’s about creating a safe, compassionate space where you can reconnect with yourself without fear of being overwhelmed or dismissed. This approach honors the idea that healing involves the whole person—the memories, the body’s stored responses, and the patterns that have kept you going through tough times.

In a trauma-informed space, there’s an emphasis on trust, safety, and pacing that respects where you are. Using methods like Somatic Experiencing (SE), EMDR, and body-centered practices, we work together to gently untangle the hold trauma has on your system. This kind of therapy reminds us that our reactions are natural responses to experiences that were too much, too fast, or too soon. It’s a process that allows you to find your footing again, reclaiming a sense of peace and wholeness, with deep respect for your pace and story.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy designed to help process distressing memories and reduce their emotional impact on your present life. With a focus on healing unresolved difficulties, EMDR works by engaging the brain’s natural processing systems to reframe and integrate difficult experiences, offering relief from symptoms like anxiety, depression, or emotional overwhelm.

Many clients describe EMDR as having an almost magical quality because of the rapid and profound shifts it can create. Feelings and beliefs you once thought were permanent start to soften and release, leaving space for growth and peace. While it’s not magic, the experience can feel transformative and life-changing. I’ve witnessed how EMDR can be a catalyst for deep and lasting change, helping clients finally feel relief and wholeness.

Somatic therapy starts from the understanding that our bodies hold onto emotions, trauma, and experiences—sometimes long after our minds have tried to manage or explain them away. In The Body Keeps the Score, Bessel van der Kolk describes how trauma can become deeply embedded in the nervous system, leading to physical symptoms, emotional upheaval, and thought patterns that don’t serve us. Somatic therapy acknowledges that talk therapy alone might not fully address these deep-seated issues. By working with the body through techniques like grounding, diaphragmatic breathing, and resourcing, it helps release stored trauma and supports true healing from the inside out.
